How Chiropractic Care Can Help Reduce Falls in Older Adults
Regular chiropractic appointments are shown to significantly boost mobility, flexibility, and balance in older adults, which empowers them to stay active and reduce the likelihood of falls. This proactive care also counters the effects of “sitting disease,” a sedentary lifestyle linked to heart issues, increased disability, and other serious health concerns.
Inspiring research led by Dr. Kelly Holt from the New Zealand College of Chiropractic, highlighted in Dr. Heidi Haavik’s book The Reality Check, found that seniors who participated in 12 weeks of chiropractic care had notably better balance and sensory awareness compared to those who did not. One standout result was an improvement in ankle joint position sense, allowing individuals to gauge lower limb activity without looking down. Their ability to quickly react to illuminated floor panels also improved, showcasing faster stepping reaction times.
This study underscores how chiropractic adjustments may improve how small joints in the spine communicate with the nervous system, sending accurate messages to the brain and enhancing coordination. These findings suggest that chiropractic care could be a valuable addition to reducing fall risks in older adults, supporting overall safety and independence.
In its 2014 report, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) revealed that 5% of falls among older adults living in the community result in a fracture or hospitalisation. More strikingly, 95% of the UK’s 86,000 annual hip fractures are caused by falls. These falls are often due to chronic issues with cognition, vision, balance, or mobility.
Age UK has pointed out that fall prevention programs for seniors are “patchy at best,” which is concerning given the impact of falls. Falls and fractures in those aged 65 and over account for four million hospital bed days each year in England, with associated healthcare costs estimated at £2 billion annually. Not only do falls carry a high risk of injury, but they also erode confidence and lead to increased isolation, as many older individuals become too fearful to leave their homes.
Chiropractic care, tailored to each patient’s age and needs, has been shown to support mobility and balance, potentially helping to prevent falls. Just one appointment a month could make a meaningful difference for older adults.
