The vagus nerve runs from its nuclei in the brain, travelling down both sides of the body and interacting with key structures along the way—including the cranium, jaw, upper neck, neck flexors, sternum, and diaphragm. It plays a vital role in regulating emotional stress, digestion, and cardiovascular function.
There are many devices on the market claiming to “activate” the vagus nerve to improve wellbeing. But here’s the truth: your vagus nerve is already working all the time! Your nervous system, including the vagus nerve, is constantly regulating your internal environment.
What’s often more effective than artificial stimulation is simply avoiding interference. That means reducing physical and emotional stress and supporting your body with healthy habits and posture.
Natural ways to support and stimulate your vagus nerve:
• Sit up straight—good posture helps reduce physical pressure on the nerve
• Lie on your back with your legs up the wall (a gentle restorative pose)
• Sing or gargle—both activities stimulate the vagus nerve through the throat and vocal cords
• Reduce stress on your system by wearing blue light blocking glasses at night
