When we think of our physical health, we often think of the ‘obvious’ factors, like nutrition and movement, but did you know that one of the most powerful influences on our long-term health is community connection? A study published in PLOS Medicine found that individuals with strong social relationships had a 50% higher likelihood of survival than those with weaker ties (Holt-Lunstad et al., 2010).
Conversely, social isolation can have a hugely negative impact on not just your mental wellbeing, but also your physical health. After the COVID-19 lockdown, the US Surgeon General’s 2023 advisory on loneliness and isolation found that low social connection is associated with a significantly increased risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and premature death. Not only that, poor sleep and higher inflammation can also be linked to this, which are both associated with physical recovery and vitality levels.
We love to create a feeling of social community at our practice, where you can come to feel connected, seen, and appreciated. We regularly hold social and community education events, which are perfect for connecting with like-minded individuals! Come and see us to find out how you can get involved here.
